Registration is now open for Creative Expressions at the Crown Point Community Library!

On Tuesday, July 7 at 1:00 PM, teens ages 12–18 are invited to join me for a relaxed, interactive creative session designed to encourage self-expression, imagination, and connection through art.

No artistic experience is required. In fact, many of the activities have nothing to do with being “good at art” at all.

This isn’t an art class.

It’s a space to create.

So... What Is "Creative Expressions"?

Creative Expressions is a guided arts-based experience where teens use creativity as a tool for exploration, storytelling, communication, and self-discovery.

During the session, participants may explore activities involving:

  • Drawing
  • Visual storytelling
  • Character creation
  • Collage
  • Creative problem-solving
  • Reflection prompts
  • Collaborative projects
  • Imaginative exercises

Each activity is designed to be flexible, low-pressure, and open to interpretation.

There are no grades.

No critiques.

No “right” answers.

Just an opportunity to create something meaningful.

What Is Expressive Arts?

Expressive arts is an approach that uses creative activities to help people explore thoughts, emotions, experiences, and ideas.

Rather than focusing on artistic skill, expressive arts focuses on the process of creating.

Research has shown that creative expression can help support:

  • Emotional awareness
  • Self-confidence
  • Communication skills
  • Stress reduction
  • Problem-solving abilities
  • Empathy and perspective-taking
  • Healthy self-expression

For teens especially, creativity can provide a valuable outlet during a stage of life that is often full of change, pressure, and self-discovery.

Sometimes it’s easier to draw an idea than explain it.

Sometimes a story helps us understand ourselves.

Sometimes creating something with others reminds us that we’re not alone.

Who Is This For?

Creative Expressions is designed for all teens ages 12–18.

Whether your teen:

  • Loves art
  • Thinks they aren’t creative at all
  • Enjoys writing stories
  • Likes gaming and character design
  • Wants to meet new people
  • Needs a positive outlet
  • Simply wants to try something different

They are welcome here.

This is an inclusive, judgment-free environment where individuality is encouraged and respected.

A Little About Me

My name is Bridgid Milenkovski. Most of the kids know me as Mrs. M.

I am a photographer, designer, lifelong creative, and educational paraprofessional working with middle school students in Crown Point.

Over the past year, I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with students from many different backgrounds and support needs. Through those experiences, I became increasingly interested in the ways creativity can help young people build confidence, process experiences, communicate ideas, and connect with others.

Creative Expressions grew from that passion.

My goal is simple:

To create a welcoming space where teens can explore who they are, express themselves freely, and discover the value of their own creativity.

FAQ

Does my teen need to be good at art?

Not at all.

Creative Expressions is designed for all skill levels, including teens who don’t consider themselves artistic.

The focus is not on creating a perfect piece of artwork. Instead, we use creativity as a tool for exploration, storytelling, communication, and self-expression.

Many activities involve imagination, discussion, writing, character creation, collage, and creative problem-solving rather than traditional drawing skills.

Is this an art class?

No.

While participants will create art, Creative Expressions is not a technique-based art class.

There are no lessons on perspective, color theory, or artistic skill development.

Instead, participants engage in guided creative activities designed to encourage imagination, self-expression, and connection with others.

Is this therapy?

No.

Creative Expressions is not therapy, counseling, or mental health treatment.

However, the activities are inspired by expressive arts practices, which use creativity as a way to explore ideas, emotions, stories, and experiences.

The goal is to provide a positive, supportive environment where teens can create, reflect, and connect.

What kinds of activities will teens be doing?

Activities may include:

  • Character creation
  • Visual storytelling
  • Creative drawing prompts
  • Collage projects
  • Collaborative art challenges
  • Reflection activities
  • Imagination exercises
  • Creative problem-solving games

Every session is a little different, and there is always flexibility for participants to interpret activities in their own way.

What if my teen is shy?

That’s completely okay.

Many creative activities can be completed independently, and there is never pressure to share personal thoughts or artwork with the group.

Participants are encouraged to engage at their own comfort level.

What should participants bring?

Just themselves.

All materials will be provided.

Why are programs like this beneficial for teens?

Creative expression gives teens an opportunity to:

  • Build confidence
  • Develop communication skills
  • Practice self-expression
  • Explore their imagination
  • Strengthen problem-solving abilities
  • Connect with peers in a positive environment

Most importantly, it gives them dedicated time to create without worrying about grades, performance, or being “good enough.”

Will there be more sessions in the future?

I hope so!

This library session is the first Creative Expressions event to gauge interest and attendance expectations.

My goal is to continue building opportunities for teens in our community to create, connect, and express themselves through art.
